Tamil Nadu

``The idea is to build an Academy which caters to future needs and is comparable with any premier institution. This Academy will be in a totally new shape commencing this year,'' Maj.Gen. Sudhir Mohan told presspersons. The complete list of facilities, which include a new weapons training complex, would be ready only by 2006. There could even be a delay of about one or two years, depending on the flow of finances. Adequate land was available for the upgradation at the present location, on both sides of river Adyar. Thanking the Tamil Nadu Government for its support for the OTA, the Commandant said that the only minor hitch that remained pertained to a few encroachments on the periphery of the Academy. He said he was confident that these would be removed by the time the work on the periphery began. The first phase, work on which has begun, involves building of cadets' accommodation and mess. The cadets are now housed in barracks in facilities which are about a century old. The cadet strength would go up to 750. . There was overwhelming response when the OTA sought architectural designs for its buildings. Ten designs were short-listed and six were selected. The OTA had awarded three architects for their designs, including one from Tamil Nadu. Since the designs were civilian in nature, they needed some modifications to accommodate the military needs. These were carried out. The Commandant said the first batch of women officers was close to completing its tenure of 10 years. He was not aware of any move to grant the women permanent commission.
