Anbalagan questions shifting of venue

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Feb. 28. At a three-day flower festival, organised in the Indira Gandhi sports complex here, the local legislator, A Anbalagan, questioned the shifting of the show from the traditional botanical garden to the sports complex.

He said the Lt. Governor, K. R. Malkani, who inaugurated the three-day festival, was meticulous in keeping the administrative machinery in fine mettle and whenever lapses were noticed, Mr. Malkani minced no words and rectified the defects without hesitation.

Mr. Anbalagan also wanted to know the reason why flower plants at the exhibition were packed in polythene sheets instead of selling them in pots. He kept on airing his criticisms.

The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, pooh-poohed the criticisms. The Minister, who was almost harsh in his rejoinder to the points raised by the legislator, said could Mr. Anbalagan say whether there was any State Chief Minister who could devote his time for the welfare of the people like the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy.

Mr. Namassivayam said it was practically difficult to sell plants in pots as it would cost Rs. 24.

On holding the festival in sports complex, the Minister said the government-constituted committee recommended that the festival should not be held on botanical garden in view of rare species of plants and trees preserved in the garden. Hence the new venue to hold the festival.
