Govt. to encourage private players in tourism promotion

Pondicherry Feb. 28. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has promised that the Government would encourage private players for promoting tourism in Pondicherry.

Tourism was almost an effective tool for the Government to tap revenue as the uniform floor rate of taxes had upset the exchequer to some extent, Mr. Rangasamy said.

He was inaugurating a two-day Institution Industry Interaction held under the banner of Akanksha `03 by the Centre for Tourism studies of Pondicherry University here today.

Mr. Rangasamy said the administration would provide all facilities and proper ambience to whoever coming forward to promote tourism.

Realising the necessity to nurture tourism, the Government had increased the budgetary allocation from Rs 6 crores to 11 crores this year.

The Pondicherry University had been contributing a lot for educational development in the Union Territory. The literacy percentage now stood at 82.35 which would be raised to cent per cent in course of time.

He lauded the performance of the students of the centre for tourism studies at placement interviews.

Teachers, who were proficient in their basic qualifying examinations, were posted in schools to ensure quality education.

Mr. Rangasamy released a magazine of the centre brought out on the occasion. The Vice- Chancellor of the University, V.T. Patil, who received the first copy of the magazine and released Placement 2002-2003 document, said it was indeed laudable that students were getting placements in leading organisations.

Detailing the growth of the centre of tourism studies, its Director Professor, M. Basheer Ahmed Khan, that the two-day meet was part of the evaluation of event organising capacity of the students. A special session on skill development also formed part of the meet.
