India 'A' takes lead

BANGALORE Feb. 28. The India `A' team of Keshav Mishra and Jasjeet Singh took the lead in the two day team event of the Eveready All India amateur golf tournament which commenced at the Karnataka Golf Association here on Friday. Sri Lanka's duo of Lalith Kumara and Amarapathma was in second position two strokes behind.

The team event is played as a strokeplay competition with the two best scores from three players. Keshav Mishra of the India A team was in good touch. Hitting well and with regulation birdies on the 5th,8th,11th,12th and 14th Keshav was well poised with a score of four under on the 15th however the 16th was a bad hole for Keshav as he double bogeyed to drop to two under. He had earlier made a bogey on the second hole also. His partner Jasjeet Singh played three over on the first nine but pulled back on the return scoring a par 36. The cumulative points of the pair was 145 which was two strokes better than the Sri Lankan pair.

Lalith Kumara of the Royal Colombo Golf Course had won the individual title in Chandigarh edition (1998-99) of the All India Amateur tournament. He too found the KGA course to his liking and with a card of one under 71 helped his country be in striking range. Lalitha Kumara had birdies on the 6th,14th,15th and 16th but duffed shots on the first, 7th and 10th to end up with 71. Amarapathma played four over 76.

India C team consisting of Jaideep Patwardhan and Sandy Lehal finised with a total of 150 to be in third place.

Bangala Desh's Siddikur Rahaman and Milon Ahammad were in fourth place followed by Simarjeet SIngh and Harinder Gupta while Ireland's pair of Michael McGeady and Mark Ryan brought up the rear.
