VAT will simplify tax structure: Collector

By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD FEB. 28. The District Collector, G. Asok Kumar, has observed that the value-added tax system -- expected to come into force from April 1 -- is a progressive legislation aimed at simplifying the tax structure.

He was speaking after inaugurating an awareness programme on VAT organised by the Commercial Tax Department at Pragati Bhavan conference hall today. He said the Government had been holding interactive sessions with the trade and business community and cross sections of society before introducing the system.

He said 120 countries were implementing VAT. In this context, he recalled that the Chief Ministers conference held in 1999 had recommended VAT's introduction in all States. He said the idea behind the interactive and awareness sessions was to make people understand the rationale behind introducing the system.

The Deputy Commissioner, Project Management team on VAT, T. Vivek, said the VAT system was applicable on 23 commodities but from April 1, VAT would be applicable on commodities barring those on which exemption was announced. He said the Government had sent the draft proposal to the Centre for approval.

He said in order to make the Indian products face global competition the tax structure was being simplified. He asked the traders and the business community not to get worried about the tax system.

In future traders whose annual income was below Rs. 2 lakhs need not register their businesses, he noted.

The Deputy Commissioner, Commercial Tax, Nizamabad, U. Yedukondalu, welcomed the gathering. Later, Mr. Vivek explained the policy and design features of A.P. VAT, while C. Sai Prasad, tax consultant, spoke on maintenance of accounts and records.

The Commercial Tax Officer-I, Nizamabad, M. Jyothi Prakash Rao, spoke on registration under VAT. The president of the Nizamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rajeev Puri, and its general secretary, Dayanand Gupta, were present.
