Councillors' proposal on borewells okayed

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI MARCH. 1. An emergency meeting of the Tirupati Municipal Council held on Friday approved the proposal made by councillors for sinking of two borewells in each ward to temporarily overcome water shortage.

Earlier, officials were grilled by the council for their alleged failure in foreseeing the impending scarcity. The municipal chairman, K. Sankar Reddy, said that work on borewells would begin on March 3. Councillors belonging to the Congress threatened to agitate if the council failed to stick to the schedule.

On the badly-mauled CC roads, due to laying of cables by a private telecom operator, members, irrespective of party affiliation, sought to know the contract details from the Commissioner, T. Venkateswarlu, who explained that the company had paid Rs.5 lakhs to the civic body for the work and hence it was permitted. The members grilled him for keeping the council in the dark on such a major deal.
