Shekhawat calls for creating a new social order

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 1 . The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, has stressed the need for creating a new social order, which will provide a reasonable standard of living with peace and harmony in a non-violent and non-exploitable socio-economic order.

Inaugurating the centenary celebrations of late Rukmini Devi Arundale here today, the Vice-President said that in building up a environment of balanced development of human communities, the country's inheritance of art and culture could play an effective role because it provided a unique model for individual character-building along with a harmonious social order.

He said Rukmini Devi realised this very early in her life. "Let it be a great revival in the sense of tremendous dedication to the spiritual life and because of that let us bring down into our life eternal values". The best way to pay tribute to her would be to bring that new social order, he said.

Earlier releasing books on speeches and writings of Rukmini Devi and the centenary commemoration volume, the Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, said she was a many faceted personality, who was considered both a modernist and a traditionalist. She was not only a promoter of arts but also a good parliamentarian, who had the distinction of piloting a private member bill on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which showed her concern for all living things.

The Kalashetra Foundation chairman, R. Venkataraman, in his welcome address, said it was a red-letter day for the foundation and he was confident that it would achieve greater achievement in the years to come.

The foundation director, S. Rajaram, read a message received from the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who was unable to attend the function owing to ill-health.
