Centre releases Rs. 2.84 cr. for judiciary infrastructure

CHENNAI March 1 . The Union Government has released Rs. 2.84 crores for development of infrastructure for the State judiciary.

The Centrally-Sponsored Scheme covers construction of court buildings and residential quarters for judges and judicial officers, according to a communiqué from the Law and Justice Ministry, addressed to the Madras High Court Advocates Association.

The letter, in response to demands submitted by the MHAA president, S. Prabakaran, to the Law Minister in September last, said: "During the current year Rs. 2.84 crores was released to as first instalment, including Rs. 48 lakhs for information technology". An additional Rs. 1.37 crores was earmarked for the current year and would be released ``taking into account the progress in the utilisation of the amount already released''.

Meanwhile, the Public Works department has written to the principal sessions judge, city civil court, Chennai, saying the State had allotted Rs. 2.19 crores for maintenance of entire court buildings in the State. Of the allotted sum, Rs. 50 lakhs has been earmarked for repairs to and maintenance of the city civil court buildings in Chennai alone. Pointing out that 15 works were under way on a nomination basis, after approval was obtained from the city civil court registry, the letter said certain MHAA demands were being considered. Nevertheless, Mr. Prabakaran and the Law Association president, J. Rajendra Prasad, have submitted separate memorandums to the principal sessions judge and the Madras High Court Chief Justice respectively, demanding expeditious implementation of the identified civil works on the court campus.
