In a release, the Vice-Chancellor said the awarding of "fast track degrees" would amount to deterioration of the total quality of such degrees. A decision to the effect was taken at the University's Syndicate meeting held on last Wednesday. The resolution became necessary in view of the University getting reports that new institutions were planning to offer programmes of study for M.E and Ph.D during weekends and holidays, thereby making up for the total requirement of contact hours in the class rooms, and also to conduct examinations for the award of PG and Doctoral degrees. Such initiatives, especially in the field of engineering and technology could erode the standards and quality of technical education for which the Anna University stood for, he said. The Syndicate felt that offering such fast track PG degree programmes amounted to violation of academic standards, rules and regulations of the university. Persons who possessed such degrees when employed as faculty members in engineering colleges, would bring down the quality of engineering. The Vice-Chancellor said he had written to the University Grants Commission and the AICTE to look into the matter and take appropriate action against such institutions.
