Official sources said that the committee would review the cases of 82 prisoners, including some top separatist leaders. Most of them are behind bars under the Public Safety Act (PSA), the sources said, adding that the list had been slashed down from 109 to 82. The meeting had been postponed a number of times, ostensibly under pressure from the Congress, which was facing the electoral battle in Himachal Pradesh, and others and did not want to be branded as "soft'' towards militancy. Following the release of six prisoners, including the JKLF chairman, Yasin Malik, the coalition Government had come under flak from the BJP, the Centre and the National Conference and was charged with being soft towards militants.
