After a meeting of the party's office-bearers here today it was announced by the general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, that organisational elections would begin next month and State level elections should be over by September, except in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi going to polls later this year. The national level election of the new party president will then take place in November-December this year. The party constitution allows only one three-year term to a person as party president, but it does allow Mr. Naidu to be elected later in the year as his present mid-term tenure is not a regular one.Although party elections have been announced, with a new style in place recently over the last few months elected State presidents have all been asked to resign and ad hoc appointments made to replace them the party may frown upon any election at all. It seems that the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, has let it be known that he would prefer the adoption of a "consensus'' approach to party positions. In short, the new mantra will be: discourage open electoral fights as these lead to factionalism and infighting. A meeting of the party's national executive will also take place in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on April 3 and 4.
