Telugu Academy awards

CHENNAI MARCH 4. Over 55 people who excelled in various walks of life, including Vice-Chancellors, CBI officials and 19 child prodigies are among those named for the annual Samaikya Bharath Gaurav Satkar 2003 (Ugadi Purashkar).

The awards will be presented on March 23, the chief convener of the Madras Telugu Academy, T.V.K. Shastry, told presspersons here today. The Sikkim Governor, V. Rama Rao, will be the chief guest. He will present the Samaikya Bharat Swarna Puraskar of Rs.1.01 lakhs to three eminent vidwans — Attili Krishna Rao (posthumous), Saraswathula Venkata Rao and P. Sangeetha Rao, for their dedicated services spread over half a century.

The awardees were drawn from all over the country and the organisation aimed at achieving national integration, Mr. Shastry said. From 1981, the organisation had provided a platform for artistes of international repute and fresh talent to perform together. It also gave scholarships of Rs. 6,000 each to students who topped class 10 in 28 States and seven Union Territories each year, apart from providing cash assistance to people who rendered meritorious service to the country and were in indigent circumstances.
