Allotted funds yet to reach sanctuary

By R.K. Radhakrishnan

CHENNAI March 4 . The Union Environment and Forests Ministry has requested the State Government to ensure that the amount released for conservation of a sanctuary at Nagapattinam reaches the beneficiary.

Following complaints that the Point Calimere sanctuary was facing problems for paucity of funds, the Director-General of Forests and Special Secretary in the Ministry, M.K. Sharma, wrote to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, Lakshmi Pranesh, on the issue.

He pointed out that the plan sanction for the sanctuary was Rs. 40.10 lakhs, under the Centrally-sponsored scheme of `Development of national parks and sanctuaries.' The Ministry, in November 2002, released Rs. 28 lakhs as the first instalment.

But ``it is learnt that the amount has not reached the implementing agency as yet, thereby affecting implementation of the annual plan of operation.'' He said the Chief Secretary to immediately arrange for the release of the money to the Forest department.
