Naidu accused of politicising development works

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD March 4. Alleging that the Government was not interested in taking legislators into confidence before taking up works in their respective constituencies, the Congress legislator, N Raghuveera Reddy, demanded that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, take into confidence all MLAs, cutting across the political lines, at least on works related to development of constituencies.

Responding to the call by the Minister for Finance, Y. Ramakrishnudu, to legislators to cooperate in the smooth passage of the budget for the current year, the Congress member said that the Government had no moral right to seek the members' cooperation till it takes all of them into confidence. "It is being reported that the Chief Minister is holding a meeting with all his legislators asking them to identify at least 10 works that should be taken up in their respective constituencies. Mr. Naidu should also invite members of other parties and seek their suggestions regarding the development in their constituencies too,'' he said.

Further, he alleged that the Government was ignoring Congress members and was taking up works in the constituencies of ruling party members. Towards this end, even Central funds were being utilised allegedly at the behest of in-charge Ministers of the districts instead of district Collectors prioritising and supervising works.

Mr. Ramakrishnudu, in his spirited reply, said that the Chief Minister was also the president of the TDP and it was in that capacity Mr Naidu convened the meeting with TDP legislators. "We are not able to understand why the Congress member is disturbed over our internal meeting? '' he wondered.

The Minister said the meeting was aimed at discussing the progress of the recent membership drive and elections conducted by the party. "The meeting only reflects the freedom we have to meet our leader. Can the Congress members say when they would get an interview with their leader? '' he remarked sarcastically.
