Bush talks to Vajpayee on Iraq

By Amit Baruah

NEW DELHI MARCH 4. The U.S. President, George W. Bush, telephoned the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, this evening and exchanged views on the Iraq situation.

Official sources said the two leaders also touched on the efforts at the United Nations Security Council to frame another resolution regarding Iraqi compliance on the issue of weapons of mass destruction.

According to the sources, Mr. Bush and Mr. Vajpayee briefly touched on the India-Pakistan relations during the seven-minute conversation. The Prime Minister is said to have conveyed the Indian position that New Delhi was willing to resume dialogue with Islamabad on all issues if Pakistan ended cross-border terrorism.

Mr. Bush said that his administration would continue to apply pressure on Pakistan to end cross-border terrorism. In particular, the U.S. would try to ensure that the levels of infiltration (across the Line of Control) did not go up when the snow melted.
