Chautala cheating on raw water: Sheila

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MARCH 4. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today accused the Om Prakash Chautala regime in Haryana of "cheating'' Delhi on the quantum of raw water released to meet the Capital's drinking water needs. She indicated that she would seek Central intervention to get the city its due share of water and also convene an inter-State meeting to sort out the issue in the best interests of all concerned.

``Not only was Haryana not giving us our due share of water, but during the past two months it has been releasing polluted water into the Delhi raw water channel which could create a serious situation,'' she said.

In fact, Delhi Jal Board was forced to shut down its Haiderpur and Nangloi plants as they were getting polluted water not fit for human consumption. "We are planning to bring this matter to the notice of the Supreme Court on March 26 when the case regarding Maily Yamuna is scheduled to come up for hearing. It seems Haryana is exporting pollution to Delhi and is acting in a most irresponsible manner,'' the Chief Minister told a press conference here convened to unveil the summer action plan to meet the water demand. Ms. Dikshit was flanked by P.K. Tripathi, CEO Delhi Jal Board, Rajiv Lal, Member (Finance) and Chief Engineer, G.C. Nandwani.

Stating that Haryana had been cheating Delhi by not releasing the correct amount of raw water, the Chief Minister said as against the obligation of releasing 40 MGD water, Haryana was only giving Delhi 25 MGD of water. "With the summer set to hit the Capital and the Assembly elections a few months away, it is expected that this `cheating' by Haryana is going to increase as there is a BJP sympathetic Government ruling in that State. We need clean water and not contaminated water which creates a situation in the Capital. We are deeply concerned about this development and this has been taken up at the highest level. The Supreme Court has also talked about the water issue and given certain directions recently to Haryana Government which we hope it will comply with,'' she said.

Ms. Dikshit said she would not only be writing to the Union Water Resources Minister, Arjan Sethi, but also meeting him over the issue. At the same time, she would also demand convening of inter-state meeting on the water issue as Delhi was being meted out a raw deal by the neighbouring States. "We are not asking for anything extra or out of the way. Our submission is that release us our due share promptly and without any delay. And also check the outflow of polluting water in Yamuna which is already faced with a serious situation on this front,'' she stated.

Further more, Ms. Dikshit said that the Central Pollution Control Board had also been informed about the release of polluted water from Haryana and the same would be brought to the notice of the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, Ms. Dikshit said the Government had obtained to barrages from Kerala to clean the Yamuna stretch in Delhi. These barrages were used to clean the backwaters in Kerala and the same would be done in Delhi. Under the scheme, the two machines would go up and down the Yamuna stretch cleaning the dirt and garbage which had piled up.

The Chief Minister also announced that the development charges for sewer had been waived by 75 per cent and this would benefit a cross section of the society.

At the same time, the Chief Minister said some restructuring was being carried out in Delhi Jal Board under which 21 water zones had been created instead of the present 12.
