Cricket unites

Sir, — Your Editorial `The Super Sixes' (March 3): You have called the hysterical fans on India's ignominious defeat against Australia as fanatics but have forgotten that these same fanatics helped in the awakening of the Indian team from their slumber and making them realise the billion hopes pinned on them to repeat the 1983 magic. Moreover, as you mentioned, they also celebrated their victory by firing crackers and dancing on the streets.

Cricket is religion in India and cricketers are demigods. Who can see their Gods face defeat? They are omniscient and omnipotent for the devotee. I agree with you that cricket evokes fierce emotions, which are scary, but it is also the uniting and binding force in India.

Shraddha Maheshwari,
New Delhi
