Plea to take over RGCB

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March 5. A delegation of MPs from the State have requested the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Union Human Resources Development Minister, Murali Manohar Joshi, for the take over of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) by the Union Government.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Mr. Joshi, the MPs have pointed out that the Centre is the only institution in the country that is wholly devoted to research in various fields connected to Biotechnology.

A sum of Rs. eight crores is needed annually for the centre to work on the lines of the autonomous Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute functioning here.

According to V.S. Sivakumar, MP, Mr. Joshi will be visiting the State capital on March 14 to personally review the working of the Rajiv Gandhi centre.
