By Our Staff Reporter
The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, Vijai Kapoor, administered the oath of office to Mr. Justice Patel at a simple ceremony in Raj Nivas. The Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, her Cabinet colleagues, judges of the Delhi High Court and the District and Sessions courts, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, MLAs, members of the bar and Delhi's Police Commissioner, R.S. Gupta, attended the ceremony. Born in Ahmedabad in 1943, Mr. Patel obtained the degree of B.A. (Hons.) with Economics in 1963. He obtained his L.L.B. degree and then M.A. with Economics and Politics from Gujarat University in 1967 before enrolling as an advocate in April 1968. He started practice in the City Civil Court of Ahmedabad in 1968 and shifted to the Gujarat High Court from 1970 onward. He joined the Chamber of the well-known advocate, H.K. Thakore, and actively conducted with him many important Sessions cases and criminal appeals. He practised independently as an advocate in the High Court of Gujarat from 1981. Elevated to the Bench of the Gujarat High Court as Permanent Judge in June 1990, he delivered several landmark judgments, particularly on town planning and building activities in urban areas. The judgments delivered by Mr. Justice Patel paved the way for removal of encroachments from public places and installation of fire safety devices in high-rise buildings. In May 2002 he took over as Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
