Tamil Nadu
By K. Ramachandran
However, it is felt, the fee structure will have to be different and the government "advice" to unaided engineering colleges to fix the annual fee at Rs. 30,000, cannot be applied to these institutions. Of the 207 medical and para-medical institutions in Tamil Nadu, 184 are unaided colleges, which even now follow a separate fee structure. In the unaided sector, there are four medical colleges with 175 seats, 11 dental colleges (594 seats); 47 physiotherapy (BPT) colleges (1,609 seats); 35 pharmacy colleges (1,343 seats); seven nursing colleges (1,230 seats) and seven colleges offering an occupational therapy (BOT) course with 193 seats. Till last year, the fee for the unaided colleges was: MBBS: Rs. 10,000 for a free seat and Rs. 95,000 for a payment seat; BDS Rs. 7,500 and 70,000; and B.Pharm Rs. 5,000 and 31,000. For B.Sc (Nursing), BPT and BOT, the fee was Rs. 6,000 and 34,000. Senior officials in the Health department and the Directorate of Medical Education today discussed the issues with the Health and Education Minister, S. Semmalai.
