France, Russia, Germany to block resolution

By Vaiju Naravane

PARIS MARCH 5. "There will not be a second resolution in the U.N. Security Council opening the way for war," the French Foreign Minister, Dominique de Villepin, said today at a joint press conference in Paris with the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Germany.

France and Russia — both veto wielding members of the Security Council — declared that they had "identical views" on the crisis over Iraq's disarmament.

Russia has already made it clear that it would not hesitate to use its veto powers to block a second resolution.

Echoing the stand, Mr. de Villepin said France and Russia would "assume all their responsibilities" to stop a draft United States resolution allowing the use of force. The three countries reiterated their opposition to war saying there was still roo m for a political solution.
