Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The gang had been evading arrest for the past three years and had struck in different parts of the State and robbed businessmen of cash and valuables. Two Tata Sumo vehicles were also seized from it. The City Police Commissioner, K.Vijay Kumar, formed a special team on the directions of the JCP (North) C. Sylendra Babu, and led by the Flower Bazaar (DCP) Mahesh Kumar Agarwal arrested the gangsters. Mr. Mahesh Kumar Agarwal said three members of the same gang were arrested on February 20. Based on the information provided by them, the others were arrested. The gangsters confessed to the police that they would get information about persons transporting "huge amounts" or cash or jewellery from `inside sources'. They would follow their `prospective victims' in vehicles and intercept them. One of the gangsters posing as a policeman would direct the victim to get into another vehicle and then rob them. The gangsters allegedly robbed Santhamurthy of 36 gold biscuits in Flower Bazaar in December 2000. The gang struck at Villupuram in May 2001 and robbed a person of Rs.14 lakhs in cash. In May, the same gang followed a victim and robbed him of Rs.10 lakhs at Kumbakonam. Two persons were robbed of 65 gold biscuits two years ago in Flower Bazaar. The gang struck in similar fashion in most of the incidents.
