The CPI central secretariat said the High Court order, ironically, attempted to find an answer to the question which the Supreme Court had refused to answer. "It means the court is asking the Government to fish for evidence. It is against judicial canon." The party urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of it and stay further proceedings in the matter. The CPI (M) Parliamentary Party leader, Somnath Chatterjee, said he would prefer to comment after perusing the court order. However, the apprehension was that some parties or groups such as the VHP should not take advantage of any situation that may be obtained, he added. The CPI, too, pointed out that India being an old civilisation, there might be layers and layers of structure beneath any structure. The order has opened a Pandora's box and paved the way for "mischief-makers" to demand similar excavations of other monuments. In place of resolving a dispute, the excavation order will give rise to hundreds of other disputes," the CPI statement said.
