DK welcomes unity on language issue

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MARCH 6. Insisting that Tamil Nadu subscribed only to the two-language formula, the Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary, K. Veeramani, today opposed any move to have milestones marked in Hindi in the State.

In a statement, he said there was need for markings in only Tamil and English.

There should be no change in the present position. ``Do northern States have markings in three languages''?

Welcoming the show of unity among the DMK, the AIADMK, the MDMK and the PMK on the issue, Mr. Veeramani said the BJP was trying to feel the depth of opposition to the imposition of Hindi and Sanskrit. Such efforts must be nipped in the bud, he said. Tamil Nadu must not yield an inch on the language issue, he added.

In a separate letter to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, Mr. Veeramani called for reservation for SCs, STs, OBCs and minorities within ambit of the Women's Reservation Bill.

``Otherwise, it would be construed as an attempt to revive the upper caste monopoly. Mere gender justice is not enough. Gender justice combined with social justice alone would bring about real social transformation and emancipation.''

Mr. Veeramani also announced that the DK would participate in an anti-war protest on March 10.
