Permanent solution needed to protect fishermen: DMK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 6. A lasting and permanent solution has to be found to secure the interests of Tamil Nadu fishermen, the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today told presspersons here.

The Centre should secure the release of the fishermen now in Sri Lankan jail. Their detention had led to tension and panic in Ramanathapuram and coastal regions of the State.

The DMK had repeatedly raised the issue of fishermen's rights and he also spoke to the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha. The party MPs, under the leadership of S. Viduthalai Virumbi, had written to the Minister today and the letter pointed out the untoward incidents happening often.

On the Tamil milestones on national highways, he said when the issue was brought to his notice before Parliament session began he directed the party MPs to meet officials and the Minister-in-charge.

The MPs were assured that the stones would be written in Tamil alone.

On the Election Commission comment yesterday on politicians with reference to Sattankulam, Mr. Karunanidhi said if the defeated candidate went to court, the EC would end up being a witness.

On the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu's decision not to withdraw the action taken against the MLA, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, he said the party was of the view that the Speaker erred.

Reacting the Mr. Kalimuthu's comments that the Opposition was not cooperating in the drought relief measures and indulged in petty politics, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Speaker was not qualified to make such a comment.

A Minister or a politician could make such a comment and not the Speaker.
