A victory `bought' in Sattankulam

By Our Staff Reporter

Nagapattinam March 6. The AIADMK has `bought' victory in the Sattankulam Assembly by-election, using its `official supremacy', the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, said today.

Talking to reporters here, he said the ruling party had misused its "governing machinery" to win the poll. To a question whether the MDMK general council decision to `work in unison' with the DMK could be construed as a prelude to the party parting ways with the BJP, Mr. Vaiko said it still remained a part of the National Democratic Alliance at the Centre without compromising on principles or ideology.

The general council passed the resolution as the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi, was working for a `cordial' relationship between the two parties, said Mr. Vaiko, who was brought here by the police from the Vellore prison in connection with a byelection clash case registered with the Kuttalam police in 1983. On Tamil markings on milestones in Tamil Nadu being replaced with Hindi and English markings, Mr. Vaiko claimed that he had asked his party MP, Krishnan, during a recent meeting at the Poonamallee POTA court, to raise the issue in Parliament. Mr. Vaiko said the prison authorities had in the last four days imposed severe restrictions on visitors. "I was allowed to meet not more than three persons a day and the total time for conversation was restricted to 30 minutes".
