Letters to the Editor
Sir, You have rightly pointed out the dangers lying ahead if this concept of `Digging up the past' is accepted as a general criterion for deciding title suits. And it need not affect only thousands of mosques, and places of worship belonging to other religions but to other areas too. And why should it extend to a few thousand years only? Why can't it be extended further back? And in due course we will be digging several places instead of digging canals and constructing roads.
A. Jacob Sahayam,
Sir, One is worried that the excavation ordered at the disputed site in Ayodhya could be like opening a Pandora's box. Experts in archaeology may differ on the interpretation of the findings. Nothing can shake one's faith. Even if the court decides that there is no evidence of any Ram temple at the site, those bent upon building a temple there may not accept the court verdict. That is why it is better that the parties concerned arrive at a consensus on building a temple with a give-and-take approach. Such a solution is better than the one imposed from outside.
D.B.N. Murthy,
Sir, If the ASI determines that there was a temple before the Masjid was built in 1528 A.D., then a question arises what was there before the temple was built? Maybe, a Buddhist temple. Then why not build a Buddhist temple there? But then the same question arises again what was there before it? The ASI's findings will be of no relevance.
K.M. Pandey,
