The police received a complaint from Sangeeta Chauhan, daughter of a retired head constable from Rajasthan, alleging that her husband, Rakesh Kumar Singh, father-in-law, Jang Bahadur Singh, mother-in-law, Champa, and sister-in-law, Sarita, had been harassing her mentally and physically. Jang Bahadur Singh retired in December last year from the Intelligence Bureau as Assistant Director, while Rakesh works with a Hindi daily. According to the complaint, Sangeeta alleged that her in-laws started harassing her for dowry soon after she got married in April last year. They demanded a Santro car and would torture her off and on. Unable to bear the harassment, Sangeeta finally went to live with her parents. On August 19, when she was three months pregnant, Rakesh and his parents went to meet her and convinced her to come along with them to their Moti Bagh residence. Rakesh's sister, Sarita, was at home when they reached there. As per the complaint, Rakesh and others started beating her and hit her in the stomach. Following this, Sangeeta fell unconscious. The next morning when Sangeeta was yet to regain consciousness, Rakesh allegedly drove her to her parents' residence, dumped her outside and fled. Sangeeta was taken to hospital where doctors said the case had become complicated and the baby had to be aborted. Despite all this, it is alleged that Rakesh kept making threatening calls to her regularly. The police claimed they have a 40-minute taped conversation between the accused and Sangeeta, in which he used foul language, threatening her of dire consequences and claiming that she was getting married to someone else. Based on the evidence submitted by the aggrieved party and a statement given by the father-in-law of Sarita, N.N. Singh, who is a retired CBI official, the police registered a case under Sections 316, 406, 498A and 506 of the Indian Penal Code on March 3 and arrested the accused on Wednesday. They were produced in a Tis Hazari Court yesterday. The court granted the police two-day remand of Jang Bahadur Singh and 14 day judicial custody to other accused.
