Exercising powers vested under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the CPCB has directed the Chief Engineer of the Yamuna Water Services, Haryana Government, to ensure that water was not released from Yamunanagar Head Work into abandoned Western Jamuna Canal. The Chief Engineer has also been directed to ensure that the flow of water from abandoned Western Jamuna Canal should not join the main Yamuna Canal at the Munak regulator. The CPCB Chairman, Dilip Biswas, has directed the Haryana Yamuna Water Services to submit an action taken report within a fortnight. Mr. Biswas said it has become necessary and expedient to take concerted measures against all polluting sources which resulted in discharge of sewage or trade effluent into Western Yamuna Canal. Untreated effluents of industries like distillery, paper and pulp and also that of municipal bodies were discharged into the abandoned Western Jamuna Canal, which gets accumulated in the 22 km stretch from Yamunagar to Dhanauri Escape. Further, the release of excess water from Yamunanagar Head Works results in flushing of the accumulated pollution load into main Western Yamuna Canal near the Manak regulator, he said.
