Release 2000 cusecs from Mettur dam: ryots

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI MARCH 7. Farmers fora, including the District Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association, have urged the Chief Minister to order release of 2,000 cusecs of water from Mettur dam with immediate effect to save the standing crop on about one lakh acres served by 17 channels off the Cauvery in Tiruchi, Namakkal, Karur, Perambalur and Salem districts.

In a memorandum, the associations pointed out that usually during the non-Mettur season (January 28-June 12) adequate water was released from the dam in the 17 channels for banana, sugarcane, betelvine and turmeric raised in these districts.

Now the four barrages between the Mettur and Bhavani dams at present had a storage of two tmcft.

The Mettur reservoir had about one tmcft. The Government should order release of 2,000 cusecs for five days at regular intervals with a 15-day break. That would help in giving a wetting to the crops.

The harvesting season was fast approaching and any delay in the water release would lead to heavy loss to the farmers, the memorandum pointed out. Thousands of farm workers would also be hit.
