Concern over atrocities against women

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI MARCH 8 . The President of the Karnataka Mahila Sahakari Mahamandal, Sarala B. Kanchan, said on Saturday that atrocities against women were increasing in spite of the facilities provided to them by the Government. She was speaking at the International Women's Day celebrations, jointly organised by the Udupi Taluk Mahila Mandaligala Okkoota, Department of Kannada and Culture, Canara Bank, and Lioness Club, here.

Ms. Kanchan said men did not allow women to come up in society. Though they kept pointing at the fact that women had been given 33 per cent reservations in elections, men did not carry out the work given to them by women leaders.

Stating that only women could provide a corruption-free administration, she called upon them to launch a struggle against corruption. Urging women to take advantage of the government schemes, Ms. Kanchan said many a time, women were not aware of these schemes. It was essential for women to become self-reliant, she said. It should be made incumbent upon them to either join the mahila mandals or the self-help groups (SHGs).
