Govt. encroaching on village tank: women's forum

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry March 8. A women's forum, Vin Meen Magalir Mandram has sent a petition to the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, focussing the problems faced by the residents of Pakkamodayanpet village as a result of the government departments themselves encroaching on a local tank for construction of the structures.

The petition signed by office bearers of the mandram copy of which was distributed to mediapersons today said that it was indeed perplexing to see that while on the one hand the Government was appealing to the people to save and safeguard tanks and irrigation sources and on the other hand some of the departments themselves were encroaching on the irrigation sources.

Sinna Vannan Maduvu had been closed and filled with sand for building a siddha hospital. This tank site was desilted some five years ago by the DRDA.

The local school in Pakkamodayanpet had not been expanded although the demand for seats had increased manifold, the petition complained. Instead of tackling the problems of sanitation and amenities for the residents the administration was busy grabbing the tank beds for construction of buildings. Solid waste had been dumped on the tank site. The Mandram also suspected whether the foundation laid for the structure was planned well by the authorities.

Copies of the memorandum have been sent to the Lt Governor, local legislator A. M. Krishnamoorthy and the Chief Minister, Ministers and Revenue authorities for preventive measure.
