CPI MLAs stay away

By Our Staff Reporter

Thanjavur March 8. Legislators and local bodies representatives of the CPI from Tiruvarur district boycotted a Government function, in which the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, participated at Tiruvarur today.

G. Palanisamy, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA and leader of the CPI group in the Assembly, said the situation (drought) in the district was not conducive to an "extravagant celebration". Moreover, it appeared "more an AIADMK event than a Government function". In all other districts, the Chief Minister distributed benefits to the tune of hundreds of crores but in Tiruvarur the amount was only Rs. 84 crores. Twentynine farmers and farm labourers had died in this district because of drought.

But the Government had not declared in the gazette the three districts (Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam) drought-prone and taken steps to provide relief.

Sivapunniyam, Mannargudi CPI MLA, and V. Selvaraj, Chairman, Tiruvarur district panchayat council (CPI) also did not attend the function. The DMK MLA, Asokan, and MP, A.K.S. Vijayan (Nagapattinam), also did not turn up though their names were printed in the government invitation.
