Cultural shows, health camps mark Women's Day

Chennai March 8 . The city today observed the International Women's Day in rather loud tones, with a series of meetings, cultural shows and health camps organised specially for the occasion.

A number of organisations working for the welfare of women held meetings to press for the implementation of the Women's Reservation Bill and calling attention to the increasing incidence of violence against women.

At the Anna University, a symposium on `An empowered India-Role of Women' was held, in which a team of doctors from the Vijaya Hospital participated. The Relief Foundation chairperson, Vidya Shankar, and the World Bank panellist for HIV/AIDS, D. Usha Rani, spoke.

The employees Provident Fund Women's Associations conducted a programme on media's portrayal of women, which was followed by a Villu Paatu performance, `Pengal Naatin Kangal'. The staff and their children participated in cultural events.

The Apollo Hospitals organised a series of activities to create healthcare awareness as part of the `Women's Health Awareness Week'. During March 2 to 8, the hospital organised awareness talks, health check-ups and a health exhibition, specifically for women.
