Participating in a conference `Contemporary Indian Women: Celebrating their spirit and success' organised by the National Institute of Industries Extension Training (Nisiet) here on Saturday, she lamented that despite accounting for more than 50 per cent of world population, estimates suggest that women own less than 0.3 per cent of property. She stressed the need for making women aware of their strengths and on their contributions to the society. Rama Devi, president, Association of Lady Entrepreneurs of Andhra Pradesh (ALEAP), observed that training and technology remained a problem for the fairer sex. Among the women entrepreneurs, marketing has been a major hindrance, she said while calling Government and institutions such as Nisiet to help the women entrepreneurs in honing their marketing skills. Noted author, Shobha De, called for dedicating today's celebrations to Kalpana Chawla, the Indian-born astronaut who died in Columbia mishap. "Kalpana dared to reach the stars and we should honour her spirit,'' she said. S. V. Prabhath, Nisiet Principal Director, S. Susheela of All India Manufacturers Organisation and Taramathi Singh, President, Lioness 32, also participated in the inaugural function.
Stress on empowerment
Women's empowerment in economic, social and political fields was vital for the society to progress and it was an essential indicator of the level of development in society, felt speakers at a meeting organised on the occasion of the International Women's Day here on Saturday. The AP United Nations Association, a chapter of the Indian Federation of United National Association, affiliated to the World Federation of United Nations Association(WFUNA), Geneva, organised the meeting inviting women from various sections to express their views. The speakers, Deputy General Manager, RBI, Hyderabad, K. Vijayalakshmi, Educational Consultant, PGRR Centre for Distance Education, OU, Sandhya Chintala, and the Director, National Institute of Amateur Radio, Suri, opined that the Women's Reservation Bill for representation in Parliament should be passed without further delay as it would result in their true political empowerment. They also pointed out that many women from the economically and privileged section lack infrastructural support from their families, society as well as the organisation for which they work. An NGO, Sahayog, celebrated the International Women's day by organising a conference on the theme `empowerment of women' at Setwin hall, Malakpet.
Protest rally
A protest rally was organised at Khairatabad junction by the All India Mahila Samskruthika Sangham (AIMSS). Several women participated in the demonstration to resent the US war mongering against Iraq and to protest against the communalism. The participants burnt an effigy of the US President, George Bush. The district AIMSS secretary, Swarupa Rani, said that International Women's Day should not be celebrated but taken as an inspiration to carry the movement for women's empowerment forward.
