Persuade sadhus

Sir, — Speaking in Rajahmundry, the Kanchi Sankaracharya is reported to have opposed the construction of new temples (March 6). Can I appeal to the Acharya to prevail on the VHP and the Bajrang Dal to put the Ayodhya issue in cold storage at least for the next 20 years, allowing the governments to concentrate on their first and foremost task of good governance?

When peace and basic amenities like unpolluted water and air are provided to the multitudes of our poor and largely innocent people, contentious issues will take a back seat. The Ayodhya issue will then be resolved amicably to the mutual satisfaction of both the contending parties. We can certainly depend on the maturity and wisdom of the succeeding generations to do it. The Acharya should persuade the `sadhus', on the warpath now, to return to their true calling.

K. Vedamurthy,
Chennai
