Why these bandhs?

Sir, — Some political parties in Kerala have called for a hartal (on Tuesday). It is a plain fact that the bandh (in whatever name it is called) is banned by the High Court. All the parties who call for the `hartal', on various occasions, claim that it is not forced on the public and people's free movement will not be restricted.

Now, it is examination time for students. The parties which have called for the hartal have announced that the CBSE examinations are exempted. Does it mean that other school examinations/colleges, etc. are not exempted? This clearly shows that the hartal is forced on the people. The report can be taken by the judiciary to stop the hartal. We sincerely expect the Government and the judiciary to wake up and put an end to this once and for all.

S. Venkateswaran,
Thiruvananthapuram
