MLAs take oath

Shimla March 10. The pro tem Speaker, Ishwar Dass, of Himachal Pradesh Assembly administered the oath of office to 64 new MLAs today. The Chief Minister, Veerbhadra Singh, was the first to take oath followed by 15 Cabinet Ministers and the MLAs.

Elections were held for 65 seats for the 10th Assembly and the remaining three would go to polls in June. The Congress bagged 40 seats, the BJP 16, the HVC one and others eight.

At least one-third of the members were first-timers. Rohit Thakur, grandson of the former Chief Minister, Ram Lal Thakur, was the youngest to take the oath today. The contemporaries of Ram Lal Thakur, Vidya Stokes, Sukh Ram, Raj Kishen Gaur and Sat Mahajan were the senior-most members.

Prominent among those who took the oath today were Tilak Raj, who defeated J.P. Nadda, high-profile Minister of the P.K. Dhumal Government; Sohan Lal Thakur, who defeated the Forest Minister, Roop Singh and Surinder Pal, who defeated the former Speaker, Gulab Singh.

Besides Ms Stokes, there are three other Congress women members while there is no woman member from the BJP.
