Nellore renamed Potti Sriramulu dt.

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has announced the renaming of Nellore as `Potti Sriramulu Nellore' district.

Mr. Naidu made a suo motu statement to this effect in the Assembly on Monday in the wake of a non-official resolution moved by the Leader of the Opposition, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday seeking that Nellore be renamed after Potti Sriramulu who made supreme sacrifice for a separate State for the Telugus.

A meeting of floor leaders of all parties and MLAs of Nellore district with the Chief Minister in his chambers preceded the announcement.

Giving a life sketch of Potti Sriramulu and the circumstances under which he launched the fast-unto death for the State of Andhra on October 14, 1952, Mr. Naidu said naming Nellore, where he was involved in social work, after him was the fittest tribute in his memory.

The Leader of the Opposition congratulated the Chief Minister on the step taken and said this was a historic day. MLAs of various parties thanked the Chief Minister for his gesture. They included M.S. Parthasarathi (BJP), N. Narasimhaiah (CPI(M)), P. Venkata Ratnaiah (TDP) and A. Vivekananda Reddy (Congress).

Jubiliation in Nellore: A report from Nellore said there was jubiliation over the announcement in the town, especially in business area of Santapet.
