A resolution adopted at the International Women's Day celebration organised by the federation here called for the enforcement of 33 per cent reservation for women without delay. (The Union Territory Assembly has a strength of 30 elected members. Normally three nominated MLAs would also be included, but the present Government has not done the nomination so far). K. Mohanasundaram, secretary, in another resolution called for the constitution of an autonomous Women's Commission. The celebration was co-sponsored by the Mahila Milan. Representatives from different organisations championing the cause of women spoke. Rajamani, project officer, Pondicherry Urban Development Agency, highlighted the programmes evolved for amelioration of the lot of women. A cheque for Rs. 5000 each was handed over to 20 women under a Centrally-sponsored scheme to enable the beneficiaries open petty shops.
