Sportspersons plot, execute murder

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MARCH 10. A national level kabaddi player allegedly conspired with her friend, an international level cyclist, to eliminate a 27-year-old man whose body was found in the parking lot of Talkatora Garden in New Delhi on Sunday evening. The person used to blackmail the woman after remaining intimate with her for six years.

According to the police, ASI Bhagwan Sahay of the Mandir Marg police station responded to a call about a man lying in a pool of blood near the Talkatora Garden parking lot around 8-20 p.m. on Sunday. The man -- found dead on the spot -- was identified as Deepak Kapoor, a resident of Mahavir Nagar in West Delhi. A case was registered and investigations taken up by Additional SHO, Mandir Marg police station, Ram Kishan.

A scooter found parked near the body was traced to Harjeet Singh, a resident of Tilak Nagar. Harjeet told the police that Deepak was a friend and that he had borrowed it for some work. He also told the police that Gurdeep Kaur, who played kabaddi at the national level and lives in Paharganj, was a close friend of Deepak for the past six years or so.

The police then questioned Gurdeep following which she broke down and confessed to her involvement in the murder. She and her friend, Amandeep, a BSF constable who has represented India in cycling championship, were subsequently arrested.

As it transpired, Gurdeep and Deepak, who owned a shop at Super Bazar in Connaught Place, knew each other and were intimate. About 18 months ago, a BSF jawan, Ranjit, introduced Gurdeep to Amandeep at the National Stadium. In the course of time, the two became very close. However, Amandeep did not know anything about Deepak.

On Thursday, Amandeep dropped Gurdeep near the Indian Institute of Tours and Travels at Chanakyapuri in the afternoon. He asked her to get in touch with him and fix a meeting in the evening. The two decided to meet at Talkatora Garden. Amandeep suspected that some one was trying to stop Gurdeep from talking to him when he tried to fix the meeting.

Finally, when Gurdeep went to meet Amandeep, Deepak dropped her in his car at Talkatora. Amandeep saw this as he was waiting for her. However, when Amandeep asked her how she reached there from Chanakyapuri, Gurdeep told him that she came in a bus. When Amandeep confronted her, she told him that Deepak was blackmailing him after developing an intimate relationship.

Enraged at this revelation, Amandeep and Gurdeep planned to eliminate Deepak.

As per plan, Deepak was invited by Gurdeep to meet her at Talkatora Garden on March 9 evening. While the two got talking on a garden bench, Gurdeep signalled Amandeep -- who was standing nearby -- to attack Deepak. He tied a wire around Deepak's neck while Gurdeep held on to him. He then slit Deepak's throat with a knife. Deepak tried to run out of the garden but only managed to reach the parking lot where he collapsed.

The two accused then went to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, changed their clothes and went home.
