Pak. Assembly prorogued over Musharraf laws

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD March 10. Amidst uproarious scenes over the controversial Musharraf laws, the Pakistan National Assembly was prorogued today.

Addressing a press conference, the Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, said that if the Opposition did not change its "attitude" it would be difficult for the Assembly to survive.

The row between the Government and the Opposition on the Legal Framework Order — containing the changes made by Gen. Musharraf — is likely to continue when the Senate meets on Wednesday for its inaugural session.

Though Mr. Jamali has offered talks with the Opposition, there is little scope for an understanding unless Gen. Musharraf is prepared to step down as Chief of the Army Staff and agree to come through the route of Parliament for his election as President.

The Opposition had earlier stated that more than 40 Senators-elect would not take the oath of office under the new Constitution.
