Gujarat survey on Christian community

Ahmedabad MarCH 10. The Gujarat Government today admitted that it had conducted surveys on the Christian community in the State but said it was undertaken at the ``local level'' and in ``response'' to a parliamentary query.

The surveys were conducted on ``local level'' as part of an answer sought by the Lok Sabha to a question raised by the former Union Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, in connection with the Anti-conversion Bill, the Home Minister, Amit Shah, told PTI.

Mr. Shah, however, said that no specific orders were given to the police to conduct ``discreet surveys'' on Christians as alleged by the All India Christian Council (AICC).

Meanwhile, the AICC said it was planning to move a writ petition in the Gujarat High Court alleging ``discriminating census and harassment'' at the hands of the State Government. A memorandum in this regard was handed over to the Director-General of Police, K. Chakravarthy. Bishop Malaviya of the CNI church told PTI that in the past one week police had visited several Christian families in Ahmedabad, Surat, Jamnagar, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Kutch districts.
