Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has referenced to the Editorial "Politics around empowerment" (March 12). It seems to be only politics all around with no real quest or zeal for empowerment. The very fixing of the inauspicious fractional figure of 33 1/3 per cent itself may indicate the schism politics that might be involved in the Bill. There does not seem to be an explicit logic behind this figure, otherwise the gender is not but a creed of discrimination along with caste and religion. Women do not constitute just 1/3 of the country's population. This seems to be only a baneful wish, if the reported figures of increasing female foeticides are any indication. Nor does the economic statistics speak of women's contribution to the GDP limited to 1/3 of the total. Women should get whatever they do get as their rightful share and not as a bountiful charity. The weakness attributed to sex might be only physical in nature.
