More judge vacancies in HC

By A. Subramani

CHENNAI MARCH 13. The sanctioned strength of judges in the Madras High Court is set to come down to 29, from the original 42, with the retirement of Justice S. Jagadeesan on March 18.

A formal circular intimating the superannuation of the senior judge was issued by the High Court Registrar (Administration) on Thursday.

The Chief Justice, B. Subhashan Reddy, forwarded to the Supreme Court a list of 11 names, comprising eight seniormost serving district judges and three senior advocates, in April 2002. (One of the advocate-nominees, Sriram Panchu, has since announced his withdrawal from the race).

Even while the fate of the list remains undecided, barring unofficial reports that nine of them had actually been cleared by the Supreme Court Collegium of Judges for appointment, two more vacancies have arisen now.

On February 7 Justice Malai. Subramanian retired. Four more judges will attain superannuation this year itself.
