Parliament is supreme: Mahajan

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MARCH 15. The BJP general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, said here today that Parliament was the "final authority" in enacting any law. While the Supreme Court could always express a view, it was Parliament which finalises a law.

In a brief interaction with the media at the airport, Mr. Mahajan said "to the best of my knowledge and going by the Constitution, it was left to Parliament to enact the law". The all-party meeting would have to decide on what details a candidate would have to file at the time of nomination.

He was reacting to questions on the Supreme Court's ruling that candidates contesting elections should provide information on assets and liabilities as also about any criminal cases pending against them at the time of filing nominations.

On the Jharkhand crisis, he hoped that the Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, would be able to prove his majority in the House. Mr. Mahajan is here to attend the BJP's State executive.

On the DMK's protest against misuse of POTA, he said every party was entitled to its view.
