Cong. leader 'assaults' KSEB engineer

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA March 15. A Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) engineer, who was checking a complaint about a reported power theft by the kin of a local Congress leader in Ranni-Angadi panchayat was allegedly assaulted by the DCC secretary, Bijily Panaveli, the other day.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 7 when the KSEB team comprising the assistant executive engineer, M. Anil, Sanal G. Nair, sub-engineer, Manu Chandy, overseer, and three line staff visited the workshop of the Congress leader's brother following a series of telephonic tip-offs regarding tapping of electricity directly from the distribution line to operate a welding set there. It is alleged that some one from the KSEB office itself had given a `warning' to the Congress leader about the KSEB team's `surprise' inspection of his brother's workshop.

According to the assistant executive engineer, who has been admitted to the Pathanamthitta General Hospital, Mr. Panaveli abused and manhandled him when the line staff were cutting the branch of a rubber tree that was lying on the distribution line.

Though the Ranni police have registered a case against the DCC

Secretary, Mr. Panaveli, on the basis of a complaint by the engineer, the law is yet to take its course against the accused who reportedly enjoys the strong political backing of the `I' camp in the State. Meanwhile, the police have also registered a case against three KSEB staff on the basis of another complaint filed by a person who reportedly is an `employee' of the Congress leader.
