NEW DELHI MARCH 15. The national task force on drought management, headed by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, has decided to allocate 19.39 lakh tonnes of foodgrains for employment-generation programmes in drought-hit States from April to June.

Of the new allocation, Tamil Nadu would get 3.5 lakh tonnes, Andhra Pradesh 3.15 lakh tonnes, Karnataka 1.65 lakh tonnes, Kerala 42,000 tonnes, Orissa 4.44 lakh tonnes, Madhya Pradesh 2.67 lakh tonnes, Gujarat 1.48 lakh tonnes, Maharashtra 1.15 lakh tonnes and Chhattisgarh 93,000 tonnes.

Announcing the decision, the Union Agriculture Minister, Ajit Singh, said the Committee of Secretaries would soon consider a proposal for revision of the norms for allocation of foodgrains for drought-affected areas and submit its report for the consideration of the task force at its next meeting on March 23.

At present, the allocation is made at the rate of 5 kg per person for 10 days in a month and the proposal is to increase the rate.
