Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
Mr. Gupta who had been a close friend of Aravindan, paid rich tributes to the late film-maker. It was almost impossible to find a film-maker who was so much dedicated and committed and so closely associated with his own works. He said that Aravindan always considered Bengal as his second home. The Malayalam poet, O.N.V. Kurup, compared Aravindan's ``Utharayanam'' with Sathyajit Ray's ``Pather Panchali'' and pointed out that as a reticent man, Aravindan used to communicate with the public through his films. The actor, Bharath Gopi, pondered how Aravindan had remained as a pillar of strength in his life. Kavalam Narayana Pannicker, writer and another close companion of Aravindan, also shared his memories of the days they had worked together. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Satish Menon said that Aravindan's contribution of poetic aesthetics through his films just could not be denied or ignored. The humanism in him reached out to his films and exploited many new themes and issues, he added. ``My endeavour is the perspective of a student who is learning the craft of cinema,'' he said. He could not dream of a higher honour than this, Mr. Menon said. The day also witnessed the 25th anniversary of Aravindan's film ``Thambu''. Several artists associated with this film were felicitated. This was followed by a Bharathanatyam recital by Swapnasundari. The Chalachitra president, G. Rajmohan, welcomed the gathering and the secretary, K.V. Narayanan, proposed a vote of thanks.
