Taking things to heart, literally

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD March 15. It sounds strange. But, there seems to be some sort of a connection between the collapse of city-based cooperative urban banks and the Osmania General Hospital!

A day after G. Ashok Kumar, one of the 13 directors of Vasavi Cooperative Urban Bank (VCUB) arrested by the police, was admitted to the OGH following complaints of chest-pain, two others followed suit on Saturday.

While Mr. Ashok was discharged by the OGH doctors saying he was normal, the two other directors -- Ganji Rajamouli Gupta and Gattu Veeresham -- were brought to the OGH in a vehicle by the jail authorities.

After completing the formalities with the Resident Medical Officer, Naseeruddin, the two directors were taken on wheelchairs to the Casualty Medical Officer, Srinivas Reddy.

When contacted, both the RMO and the CMO pleaded ignorance about the ailment. Mr. Reddy suggested that the duty doctors at the Acute Medical Care, where the two directors were admitted, be contacted for details.

Inquiries revealed that the two were admitted following complaints of chest-pain and were kept under observation. It is interesting to note that a director of Charminar Cooperative Urban Bank, Hasan Abbas, is still undergoing treatment in the OGH since he was arrested in September 2002, following the bank's collapse.

Two other directors of Charminar Bank, including a woman, were brought to the OGH after their arrest by the Crime Investigation Department. They were `treated' for more than three months in the hospital.

One of the two directors was discharged by the OGH doctors after the authorities found the director playing `Antakshari' in the hospital room.
